Mental health volunteers

help children and parents recall the traumatic event without becoming overwhelmed with negative emotions.
The immediate purpose of our training is to educate emotional support volunteers on the effects of trauma on the psychic structure in childhood development.
→ Volunteers learn about the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress
→ How to create a safe/therapeutic environment for the children
→ How to talk about the disaster in a therapeutic manner and provide support to   the children and their family;
→ How to screen children and determine when to refer for additional serves.

Abating symptoms of post traumatic stress

in BVI children traumatized by the events of Hurricane Irma
Residents of the British Virgin Islands lost mostly everything when Hurricane Irma bulldozed across the territory. Survivors share stories of the utter devastation in the region; each story conjures up a similar image. Diane describes the hurricane as a “violent shaking that felt like a combination of a hurricane, earthquake, and tornado”. Other residents describes the intensity of the storm that destroyed infrastructures and personal belonging as the most terrifying experience they have ever witnessed; all echoing that the storm was both “loud and scary”.

The storm’s fury  left residents with very little personal belonging and a whole lot of destruction. Buildings were demolished or mostly destroyed and residents were left with the mammoth task of picking up the “shattered pieces of their lives”. Most residents reports losing everything; acknowledging it will take years for the territory to return to it’s former state. The journey to restoring their lives, livelihood, and homes will not be easy and many residents are left asking the question, “how do I begin to rebuild from nothing?”

As the residents tirelessly work to rebuild their lives, our team at “We Stand With Inc.” is also working tirelessly to ensure that the regions most vulnerable are provided with the emotional support needed to abate symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress by collaborating with grassroots organizations within community.
