attending to children's mental health
We believe it is of utmost importance that leaders, educators, families, community members and mental health professionals begin to respond with great concern to the disturbing trends affecting Caribbean children. Epidemiological studies of emotional and behavioral disorders point to an increase in diagnosable conditions in children; highlighting that the increase in child poverty, exposure of children to violence in families, schools, and neighborhood has deleterious effects on our children. With this in mind, we design and develop programs aimed at tackling issues that compromise the development of children.

Tackling The Symptoms
One aspect of our program design and development is to reduce the rising rates of psychiatric symptomatology among children and the effects of such symptoms on the ability of children to succeed in school and develop into emotionally and vocationally successful adults. We are acutely aware that though the prevalence of disturbance has increased, the availability of specialized resources for effective interventions has not improved enough to address these needs. Our team focuses on tackling the symptoms of behavioral disturbances through meticulously designed programs geared towards improving children’s emotional health.

EARLY INTERVENTION IS A MUST
Mental health intervention for Caribbean children should no longer be an option; it should be mandatory. Without appropriate emotional support, many children who may stand to benefit substantially from mental health support are diverted into juvenile justice systems. These frequently overburdened bureaucracies are often not sufficiently prepared to address children’s’ mental health needs, contributing to the greater likelihood that these underserved children will have their mental health symptoms managed with restrain and punishment.

Addressing Community Violence
Our programs are designed to address concerns of violence in families, schools and communities. Caribbean children are experiencing a significant rise in the exposure to violence in homes, in their schools and in their communities. It is clear that exposure to violence contributes to increased levels of anxiety, maladaptive behaviors, difficulty concentrating, depression, difficulty sleeping and apprehension in trusting social institutions as providers of nurturance and protection.
