Global Citizenship in action
We seem to have grown accustomed to turning on the television and seeing reports of bad news — natural disasters or violence — but every once in a while, an uplifting story sneaks into the mix. Recently, a newscaster reported on how some teenagers helped an elderly neighbor around her yard after a storm when the woman hadn’t even asked for help. The teenagers’ motivation was simply because they wanted to do something that was kind for someone in need. What they didn’t expect was the added benefit of “feeling good about themselves for helping out.” It is no secret that volunteering has positive effects on everyone, both the giver and receiver. People often say they “get more than they give” when they volunteer.

Volunteering – A work of “heart”
Our volunteers recognize their positive impact in communities and understand that volunteers are often considered the glue that “holds a community together.” Our volunteers give freely of their time, energy and skills as they connect with community members on a deeper level, which aids in community enrichment. One of the most profound beauties of volunteering is the positive impact on both the giver and the receiver. This is because volunteers gain a sense of achievement and motivation generated from the desire and enthusiasm to help.

Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteering has real benefits. Helping others creates opportunities for making new friends and building a support network of like-minded people. Volunteers also experience benefits such as improved self-esteem, exposure to new experiences, reduction in stress, loneliness and lowered risk of depression. Volunteering has even been shown to lower and improve symptoms of mental health difficulties such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, anxiety and other conditions in volunteers themselves. Volunteering also provides perspective about the struggles of others but most importantly, volunteering is fun!

INTERNSHIP
Our interns serve as change agents; they bring new ideas and fresh perspectives to the community work we do. Each intern plays a very important role in de-stigmatizing affective disturbances in Caribbean communities. Our student interns are consistently amazed at the impact their involvement has on community members. Interns are constantly being challenged to apply their knowledge to ambiguous community challenges and their success is underscored by their ability to remain flexible and insightful. Like our partners, our interns are connected to the work we do by their passion to serve their communities, recognizing that social impact is not determined by the scale of our community but instead by how we serve our community members.
